Public bug reported: Certain PDFs such as
https://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/downloads/ring/ring-2014-05.pdf render in ghostscript 9.22~dfsg+1-0ubuntu1.1 (as found on a fresh Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS install) with almost all characters replaced by either random characters or empty rectangles. Same problem in gv. The same PDFs render correctly on older Ghostscript versions (e.g., Ghostscript 9.18 from Ubuntu 16.04), as well as with other PDF viewers (e.g., evince, okular, acroread). The PDFs pass the Adobe Acrobat "preflight" checks. How to reproduce (X11 required): $ wget https://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/downloads/ring/ring-2014-05.pdf $ gs -dSAFER ring-2014-05.pdf Expected behaviour: Journal title (big font, top of page 1) should read "The Ring" Actual behaviour: Journal title (big font, top of page 1) reads "7KH 5LQJ" There are no error or warning messages. [A very similar PDF (same fonts, just produced by a different Adobe InDesign / PDF Library version) that does not exhibit this problem is e.g. https://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/downloads/ring/ring-2014-01.pdf and other example files can be found in the same https directory. ] ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 18.04 Package: ghostscript 9.22~dfsg+1-0ubuntu1.1 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 4.15.0-33.36-generic 4.15.18 Uname: Linux 4.15.0-33-generic x86_64 ApportVersion: 2.20.9-0ubuntu7.2 Architecture: amd64 CurrentDesktop: XFCE Date: Wed Sep 5 17:25:56 2018 InstallationDate: Installed on 2018-04-27 (131 days ago) InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 18.04 LTS "Bionic Beaver" - Release amd64 (20180426) SourcePackage: ghostscript UpgradeStatus: No upgrade log present (probably fresh install) ** Affects: ghostscript (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: amd64 apport-bug bionic -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1790908 Title: Ghostscript 9.22 garbles characters when rendering certain PDFs To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ghostscript/+bug/1790908/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
