Public bug reported: Binary package hint: bcm43xx-fwcutter
The newer versions of UBUNTU and DEBIAN allow to automatically download and install firmware for several wireless cards using the (unmantained?) package bcm43xx-fwcutter (instead of nsdiswrapper). Unsing this firmware causes my laptop (ASUS A6Tc) to experience regular and severe hangs. It also happens, less frequently, in a HP dv5000z running UBUNTU 7.10 and only very rarely (only once actually) in a IBM Thinkpad T40 also running UBUNTU 7.10. The hangs happen more frequently with the 64 bit versions of the distributions (only tested on the ASUS machine). It also appears that the problem is more severe with the newer kernels [for instance, I never observed this problem with DEBIAN Etch (64 bit) in the ASUS laptop or with UBUNTU 7.04 (32 bit) in the IBM laptop]. I am currently running Mandriva 2008 (32 bit) and I installed the wireless firmware from the Windows partition with nsdiswrapper in the ASUS computer (the card is a BCM4318). The hangs happen only very rarely and are not severe (they last for 2 or three seconds and so I do not need to reset the computer as before). In view of these results, I am going to try Ubuntu 7.10 (64 bit) installing the firmware from the Windows partition with nsdiswrapper and let's see what happens (fingers crossed). ** Affects: bcm43xx-fwcutter (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Installing RESTRICTED DRIVERS (bcm43xx-fwcutter) makes my system instable https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/160084 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
