Ok, I found a fix, but I still think this is a bug because synaptic
/upgrade-notifier should have done this automatically.

The reason I had no sound or wireless was that the modules were missing,
so first I installed linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.22-14-generic (why didn't
update-notifier upgrade that package too?). After intalling them, I
rebooted into the buggy kernel and expected to have sound/audio, however
still the modules were not loaded.

I then proceeded to run depmod -a and reboot again, now the modules were
automatically loadad and the sound and wireless is now working properly.
So the two relevant questions are:

1. Why didn't the update-notifier offer to upgrade
linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.22-14-generic if I had the older version
linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.22.11-generic.
2. Why when I installed the newer version of linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.22-14
depmod -a wasn't run automatically from the package installer?

Regards,
