I've also a Dimension 2400 with 512MB RAM but I never experienced this problem.
I had however the problem that I couldn't switch (with any linux distribution) to a resolution over 640x480. To solve this (right now I'm at 1440x900) I had to enter the BIOS and change the Graphic Memory from 2MB to 9MB (iirc).
