We were able to determine the cause for the loss of sound while working
together in IRC. When unattended-upgrades installed the new kernel, the
linux-image-generic and linux-modules-extra-4.15.0-32-generic packages
were removed shortly after:

Start-Date: 2018-08-15 06:18:14
Commandline: /usr/bin/unattended-upgrade
Install: linux-modules-4.15.0-32-generic:amd64 (4.15.0-32.35, automatic),
linux-image-generic:amd64 (4.15.0.32.34, automatic),
linux-image-4.15.0-32-generic:amd64 (4.15.0-32.35, automatic),
linux-modules-extra-4.15.0-32-generic:amd64 (4.15.0-32.35, automatic)
End-Date: 2018-08-15 06:18:37

Start-Date: 2018-08-15 06:18:40
Commandline: /usr/bin/unattended-upgrade
Remove: linux-image-generic:amd64 (4.15.0.32.34),
linux-modules-extra-4.15.0-32-generic:amd64 (4.15.0-32.35)
End-Date: 2018-08-15 06:18:41

Unfortunately, we don't know the cause of the package removal.
