Public bug reported:

I noticed this in Feisty, and it is still present in Gutsy. Using
Kubuntu, I have Kontact start up automatically when I log in. I have
configured it to use fairly large fonts on my 1600x1200 display. As
long as I don't quit Kontact the fonts look okay.

If I quit Kontact (Ctrl-Q) and then restart it either from the menu, or
Alt-F2 Kontact, the fonts are a very different and smaller size.

This same problem occurs with konsole, konqueror, and I would guess all
the KDE apps.

This is somehow related to the problem I've been having with font sizes
in Gutsy. I have an ATI Radeon Pro 9200 graphics board which isn't
supported by the proprietary driver, so I use the xorg ATI driver. It
used to work well. In Gutsy it had trouble getting to 1600x1200, and
in any resolution the fonts for tools started from the menu were huge.
I don't mean like 18 point, but like 3 inches tall. They were so big
sometimes that the menu bar couldn't even display. It was completely
unusable.

I could work around it by using VESA mode, but then I couldn't get high
resolution. Today I figured out how to get the ati driver to show
1600x1200, but the fonts were still enormous. Putting the displaysize
in xorg.conf made no difference.

I finally found a work around. In the kdm config comparing I use this line:
ServerCmd=/usr/bin/X -br -dpi 40
So if I tell the server to use 40 dots per inch I get reasonable fonts, even
though my screen resolution is about 100 DPI.

So I have workarounds, but there is something very weird going on--or
maybe several somethings.
