Re: Noatime, etc. ..why not just set APM to shut the disk off after two minutes of inactivity? ..then, even if the disk unparks right after it parks, this will at least happen few enough times to give 2/3 years of hd life (assuming it was cycling all the time, which it wouldn't be, and therefore would probably end up around 3/5 or more years of life). And if some kind of regular disk access is occurring, it won't even park -- which is quite fine.
