Well... I wanted to try disabling my extensions to see whether I could
get the Wayland session to work, when I noticed that Dash to dock was
enabled - it was still left there after my upgrade from 16.04. After
disabling it, Ubuntu Dock (if that was even what was running) appears to
work fine.

So I'm guessing it might be a bug in Dash to dock, so I'm closing this -
unless the bug originated in the interaction between the two, and some
action still needs to be undertaken?
