I've tested the new kernel, it doesn't work. It also hangs at the screen where the login screen should apperar.
However, not all the new kernel packages were installed. I've selected only for amd64 architecture, but at one particular package, the headers or something, it asked me for libssl1.1 which I do not have. Only libssl1.0. I purged the new kernel as this is a production machine and this is not a solution. So the conclusion is that the problem is still present in the 4.18 rc7 kernel.
