I having the same problem. Laptop Asus N551JX. Intel® Core™ i7-4720HQ CPU @ 2.60GHz × 8 Fresh install, tried with and without nvidia drivers, tried to stop thermald, didn't help. /var/log/kern.log keeps reporting of critical cpu package temp or something before shootdown... That feeling like critical halt temp has lowered in kernel. Returned to 16.04 meanwhile. Loved 18.04 very much!! Please fix this soon.
