I just update my bios today to see if it would fix my issue, it fixed
other things. ( quiet n cool, now working correctly )

in my case:
1: it seems like my harddrive was put to low powered mode or part of the IO sub
system was put to sleep
2: programs needing to write to a file or open a new file stale
3. the system will seem to fully lock up.
4. I'll have to hard boot it

I have the eye candy off, USB emulation ( bios settings ) only on for KB/MS,
NV-GLX-NEW drivers active,
I deleted all the apt-get cached files
I reinstalled all of python, all of X.org, and gdm

I used a boot disc and scanned my harddrive for issues, full media scan
and no bad sectors or any issues.

one user says this happens on 7.10 server too.
