My sound also stopped working completely after upgrading from Feisty to Gutsy (7.10). My audio hardware is:
lspci | grep Audio 00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 02) Kernel 2.6.22-14 appears to break my sound. Reverting to kernel 2.6.20-16 fixes it. When it is broken, I get no sound whatsoever, and applications trying to play a sound give the message "no volume control gstreamer plugins and/or devices found". The sound control icon in the top menu bar has a red X.
