On one of the machines for which the "initrd" grub's menu.lst line wasn't added, my /etc/kernel-img.conf says :
do_symlinks = yes relative_links = yes do_bootloader = no do_bootfloppy = no do_initrd = yes link_in_boot = no I would add that on this machine, the root filesystem resides on EVMS which means something like LVM on top of software RAID...
