Anyway, I am having much the same problem. Logging out, shutting down, and switching users usually results in a black screen before the logout even finishes while the computer apparently continues to run to some degree. I have to force the computer to power down to use it again. The graphics driver chosen by X when I first installed 7.10 (from scratch) was an experimental driver, so I tried switching it to the driver that had worked for me on prior versions of Ubuntu (i810). This did not solve the problem, and may have accually exacerbated it--it seems like now the black screen problem occurrs every time I try to shut down rather than just sometimes.
