Hi Christopher, I have tracked down my 'flip_done timed out' fault!
I noticed in my DMESG log that in the lines where 'flip_done timed out' occurred with long delay periods of over 10 seconds, the error referred to 'SVIDEO-1'. A quick Google on that revealed that I am not alone and that this is a known issue relating to old Intel graphics hardware: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/intel_graphics http://distro.ibiblio.org/fatdog/web/faqs/intel-graphics.html My Compaq Presario A900 is over 10 years old so I guess my integrated Intel graphics chipset is not so well supported these days. The remedy is to put 'video=SVIDEO-1:d' as part of my kernel boot parameters via the grub bootloader options, in the file: /etc/default/grub ## Updating the following text line to disable the S-VIDEO interface... GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash video=SVIDEO-1:d" ## Followed by... sudo update-grub My Ubuntu 18.04 is now quick to bootup and shutdown, and with no 'flip_done timed out' errors! Yay! I have tested this with both the current kernel 4.15.0 and the upstream kernel 4.17.0 and all is OK. Thank you very much for your help and guidance. I have learnt a little bit more about Linux/Ubuntu during this exercise and have managed to vastly speed up the boot time of my Ubuntu laptop in the process. It looks like this bug was affecting me for many old kernels and I just hadn't noticed it! I will make a note on the official bug report thread and close it off as 'solved'.
