Public bug reported:

Was searching for a method to disable DPMS via a custom
/etc/X11/xorg.conf file and discovered this bug. Under a fresh Ubuntu
18.04 minimal desktop installation, after stopping gdm3 and executing
"sudo X -configure" in /etc/X11 subdirectory to create an xorg.conf
file, this happens:

Description: Ubuntu 18.04 LTS
Release : 18.04

apt-cache policy xorg

xorg:
  Installed: 1:7.7+19ubuntu7
  Candidate: 1:7.7+19ubuntu7
  Version table:
 *** 1:7.7+19ubuntu7 500
        500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu bionic/main amd64 Packages

What I expected:

I expected "X -configure" to write a default xorg.conf file in
/etc/X11

What happened instead:

  X binary crashed

Personal Note:

Will create ugly hack to solve my problem while this bug gets fixed.
Not holding my breathe, please add "you don't need an xorg.conf file"
comments below. :D
