While support for the i386 installer image was removed, the 32 packages
still exist in the archive so an upgrade from Ubuntu 16.04 to Ubuntu
18.04 should be fine. Just to be certain I tested this today and
everything worked out. Do you happen to have any more details about how
everything was messed up? Specifically log files of the upgrade would be
helpful.
