I have just had the similar experience as phirestalker: sound playback and recording with my USB headset were broken after an upgrade to gutsy, but removing my ~/.asound* files (and then running "asoundconf set- default-card Intel") fixed it. I have a Dell Inspiron 630m with Intel HDA audio, and a Logitech USB headset.
