I have gutsy 7.10 too, and since then xgl is taking from 100MB at boot to 400MB and is slowing down my machine a lot! I only have a nVidia GeForce 3, but it was faster before!
mmm, guys? ... after doing "sudo apt-get remove xserver-xgl", what else have you done?
