Same problem. I had to remove compiz because I have a multiseat configuration
and one of the seats use a mach64. On that screen I was getting a white screen
for some users. Gdm would show the login screen and the user would login, but
immediatly after the first refresh the screen would go white. I tried
everithing I could think of until I noticed that compiz was running for that
user and decided to remove it, and that fixed that problem. But then metacity
won't start for a long time. I can bring up a terminal (I have a launcher in
the panel) and start metacity manually.
Is there an easier way to disable effects in metacity without reinstalling
compiz? (Of course, the menu in system->preferences is gone now)
Mine was as well an upgrade from Feisty to Gutsy, and that upgrade was anything
but smooth! There is something about the simplicity and stability of Slackware
that I'm starting to miss ...
