I reported this above in comment 62 last year on a Toshiba A100-TA6. I tried the Gutsy live CD. It allows suspend, but not hibernate.
When I tried suspend, the video was fine after and the desktop appeared again unharmed. So, I can say that Gutsy fixed it with suspend. Unsure about hibernate, but it probably is the same.
