Unfortunately, it seems that I spoke too soon. :( The bug came back after I rebooted. I've also noticed the same problem with the GNOME Login manager sounds. Interestingly enough, the system sounds manager seems to work fine. I'm not sure if this is a related bug in the Login manager or if the bug is actually in a third package.
I have a pretty standard Gutsy install on a Toshiba Satellite 1130-S155 laptop.
