I do have a similar problem booting Ubuntu Gutsy.: cannot get the right screens or the screens I get in Feisty (terminal window with boot information (with startup-manager)), My login screens also stay the Ubuntu brown for a long time before it changes to my solid colour background and than it still takes a very long time for Gutsy to load..
Don't know what the problem might be (GNOME?) The logout screens are also incorrect. Sometimes Gutsy cannot even load the right theme at start-up (crash of a program, don't know which). I mentioned this before at several other bugs. (trouble with boot, login and logout screens). Anyway, This prevents me from using Gutsy.
