Hmm, looks like I've been able to solve it. I removed the .asoundrc and 
.asoundrc.asoundconf and then ran
asoundconf set-default-card ICH5

Then everything works fine. But I still don't know what caused this
problem in the first place, and why it didn't work automatically. So
maybe this is not to be labeled as a bug. However this issue indicates
that there is room for improvement to the user-friendliness of the sound
configuration. But I don't know specifically what that improvement would
be though.
