Having a master control makes the most sense to me. On several of my systems, this ends up being PCM. However, the problem with using pcm is that I can't get it to mute. I'm currently using a Microsoft Sound System set of speakers, and for some reason, it decided to give the bass channel a mute, but not the line out channel.
