Public bug reported:

`vlc` freezes about 50% of time when entering the timeline/playback
progress bar with the mouse cursor. The freeze takes between 5 seconds
and 2 minutes and makes `gnome-shell` crash in about 50% of cases.
There's no output on console indicating the cause for the freeze.

Steps to reproduce:

1. download the VLC demo file http://samples.mplayerhq.hu/MPEG-4/video2.mp4 to
`/var/tmp/` and open it
2. enter the timeline until the time progress popup is shown and leave it
repeatedly until a freeze occurs
