Could you check the content of your '/etc/mysql' dir?

If you could explain the exact steps that lead to this issue, it would
permit me to understand better the sequence.

These error lines could also be relevant:

the '--basedir' option is always ignored

Got the following error when calling the 'mysql' command line client

Feb 16 07:15:47 hostname /etc/mysql/debian-start[2542]: FATAL ERROR: Upgrade
