Here's a test kernel which incorporates the 'retpoline' patch set (soon to be released in Xenial):
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kamal/linux-aws-rtp0/ (only the linux-image .deb is required). My smoke test indicates that this kernel fixes the problem.
