First of all, you are trying to get their product to work under a Virtual Machine (the host system does not matter so much here), and I'm sure they will be interested in making this work. Secondly, I can imagine they may also be interested in getting it to work under a Linux (or POSIX compliant OS / Unix derivate) host system, if the software itself is running in a virtual machine under a curently supported Ms operating system. After all, this is what some of their bigger clients surely do. > I have configured XP sp2 four to five times now, trying the non ose > version of VirtualBox, and even their latest version 1.5.2 that was > packaged specially for Gutsy. In all cases I get the same error. This makes me think you should consider to also file a bug against the non-OSE version of VirtualBox. > > I have followed Windows tutorials for "Windows Installer Service" > errors, no luck. > > Again, this problem was not present in Feisty, leading me to believe > it has more to do with Gutsy than anything. In this case, it may indeed be an issue which only occurs in relation to newer virtualbox releases. Which was the virtualbox version you used on Feisty? Please provide the version number and the installation type (OSE/proprietary), if you can remember. Also, did you try to use exactly the same Windows version when installing on both virtualbox on feisty and gutsy? > There have been numerous reports of VirtualBox not running correctly > under Gutsy, so I don't find it too far off that it is the cause, > especially after the things I have tried to get it to work. The fact that there have been several - unrelated, as far as I can tell - bug reports for this package on gutsy, doesn't neccessarily mean that something that doesn't work and involves running this package is related to it, too. But I agree one may be tempted to consider this fact to provide some indication it may be related. > Thanks for looking over the bug report, if you have any more > suggestions, I will try them out. Please note that I'm not the package mantainer nor an Ubuntu developer. I'm just a random virtualbox user asking some questions which I believe may help sorting this out.
