Also, I've heard of a vaguely similar bug that went away after rotating
the screen 90 degrees via `xrandr -o right`.

Could someone who is able to reproduce this issue try rotating the screen and 
see if it behaves itself better?
(Yes, I know this is a long shot, but if it's not too much trouble, it could 
help eliminate this possibility...)
