I have an issue like that too :(

I reinstalled all the ooo components already, but my problem still
exists...

What I tried:

- I removed my .openoffice... directory completly
  - after that 'ooffice' started perfectly for the first time
  - on the second time I got error messages like 'WARNING **: Unknown error
forking main binary / abnormal early exit ...'

- I can start OpenOffice.org any time with 'soffice' command without
trouble

- If I launch OpenOffice.org (with soffice) and I switch on the Quickstart
option
  - then I can use all Ooo menu item without error
(quickstart don't start automatically after login)
- after I exit from quickstarter or I disable it
  - I can't use Ooo menu items any more, only 'soffice' command works :(

I think the oobase, ooffice... scripts execs some quickstart dependent
code, but that code don't checks if quickstart is running... I don't
know :(
