Public bug reported: I have a system with two sound cards. An onboard VIA822 sound chip (which I don't really use) and an SBLive sound card (which I wish to use as my default card). Under all previous releases of Ubuntu (i.e. Warty through to Feisty) this setup worked fine, i.e. I selected SBLive from the volume control, adjusted my sound levels and all was well.
However having upgraded to Gutsy it's now pot luck whether it works or not. Upon booting then sometimes the SBLive gets allocated as card(0) and the VIA822 gets allocated to card(1). In this case sounds are output from the SBLive, nothing appears from the VIA822 and I am a happy user. On other occasions the VIA822 get allocated to card(0), the SBLIve becomes card(1) sound now appears from the VIA822 but I simply cannot get any sound at all to appear from the outputs of the SBLive. Having done some half hearted digging into this late last night I know I could either disable the onboard sound in the BIOS (when I remember I'll probably do this "for now") or I could add the VIA822 to some sort of Blacklist file (I skimmed through this on a forum post somewhere so I'm sketchy on details) but sound is definitely not working properly for me in Gutsy. But the main reason for filing this bug report is I think that the preferences applet should make it easier to manage multiple sound cards. Currently you can go to the System" > "Preferences" > "Sound" menu applet but it's not clear whether choosing "Default Mixer Tracks" actually selects the soundcard you wish to use or whether it simply determines which controls get shown in the volume controls mixer applet (I suspect the latter) It's also not clear whether you can use multiple cards at once ? And there doesn't appear to be a GUI way to force the cards to be detected in a particular order i.e. "always use card X as card(0), card Y as card(1), card z as card(2)" etc. etc. All in all I would say that there definitely needs to be something in the sound preferences dialogue where you can choose your default sound card ! ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Sound is intermittent with two sound cards, needs better GUI control https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/156796 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
