There's a backlight control program for the macbooks with HAL integration available here: http://ubuntu.desrt.ca/ (packages macbook-backlight and macbook- backlight-hal) It works fine in dapper but seems to be incompatible with edgy's hal, although the stand-alone program still works and both packages still install fine.
