I experienced the same issue in 16.04 but things definitely worked in
16.10 (and still do in a parallel installation, where I use proto=imps
resetafter=0)

Updating to 17.04 now results in the same problem again. Mouse clicks
are lost regularly, and dmesg shows entries like below:

byte 6
[ 2677.931700] psmouse serio1: Touchpad at isa0060/serio1/input0 lost sync at 
byte 6

I am adding this comment because it seems that things worked well in
16.10.
