Same for me. Laptop HP nx7300, i810 chipset. After manually specifying -dpi 96 parameter in /etc/gdm/gdm.conf for X startup command all goes ok. Here is the forum thread on this problem: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=583159
