I think I know what you mean, but I'm not sure it's a Compiz bug: some
windows (I notice particularly Banshee & Firefox) sometimes don't
properly maintain their maximised state over a close/open cycle.  They
end up slightly larger than maximised, and so span two viewports.
Remembering a window's position/size/state is not Compiz's job.

I forget what library Gnome apps use to remember their
position/size/state (is it libwnck?), but I think this may be fixed in
2.20.1 - testing the new Gnome libs from gutsy-proposed I don't seem to
see this behaviour any more.
