Subject: [Bug 155630] Re: After md5sum of a Ubuntu DVD the optical drive
is unresponsive>> Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and
helping to make Ubuntu better. Can you please describe the exact steps
you did to check the md5sum on the DVD?>>From the HowToMD5SUM I think
you may have done cd into the CD directory? That will indeed block the
eject function. Please change into another directory first (for example:
cd ~) and then try to use the eject function again. Please let us know

** Description changed:

  Ubuntu Version: 7.10 Beta
Affected Hardware: [SONY DVD RW DRU-830A] eject button
Affected Software: The Unmount Volume/Eject options in right-click shell and
the utility that controls it

Problem: Trying to use md5sum on DVD of [Ubuntu 7.10 Desktop Edition
i386] cripples/freezes the optical drive and the utility that controls
it by outputting an error message every time you try to use the Eject
button on optical drive and/or Unmount Volume/Eject within Ubuntu GUI.
The error message is: [Error: Cannot unmount volume: An application is
preventing the volume 'Ubuntu 7.10 i386' from being unmounted] but the
  DVD is still fully functional(read)

Weird: The process after finished running display a new line in
terminal, and stops the LED blinking on DVD drive(That usually
symbolizes the process is done running) but after ~10min responds to
user request of either Unmount the Volume or Eject Commands by opening
  the tray

Workaround: CDIntegrityCheck aka "Check This CD for defects" works
perfectly for checking the CD/DVD integrity but if the user chooses to
use the alternative method; through Ubuntu GUI, either the process hangs
to start off with and doesn't output anything or it does actually run
like it's supposed to and if DVD is 100% healthy does not output any
- .txt log but hangs the utility that controls mountable media.
+ .txt log but hangs the utility that controls mountable media

I had the 7.10 Beta for quite some time and I haven't really installed
any big packages to alter the system that much, and all I'm trying to do
is upgrade to the latest release version by following the most
bulletproof method but stumbled across this little annoyance that I
thought was important to share to the newcomers as I also read the
  HowToMD5SUM guide

I think the "MD5SUM on CD" section under HowToMD5SUM community guide
should be edited to include an exit process to shutdown the service
after use. I am pretty new to Ubuntu, so might not know the real reason
- behind this unexplained error.

UPDATE------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
+ In Linux, you must unmount a volume before you can eject/open it for the sake
of application stability. The below commands work perfectly, which leads me to
believe that this problem I stumbled upon is not a bug, but a mere lack of
knowledge of how Ubuntu handles media. Someone should still append the
HowToMD5SUM guide, and add these commands so that newbies like me don't get
confused why their optical disc gets stuck in their optical drive
+
+ After string:
+ "If the command outputs any errors, you'll know that either the burn was bad
or the .iso is corrupt. Please note that this method does not verify
authenticity unless the hash of the iso file is compared to the hash at the
secure UbuntuHashes page."
+ And since Ubuntu guides are all almost written for users other than root and
are full of examples, add the code below:
+
+ sudo unmount /media/cdrom0/ -l [or] cd..
+ sudo eject media/cdrom0/
