I did that, but it didn't solve anything. The machine was indeed left in a unusable state. The only thing I could do was a complete install from the CD, which I have now done, including of course re-formatting the partitions with log files on (unless they were written to /home, which seems unlikely).
Had there been more helpful information in the message about saving particular logs, etc., I would have done that if possible. Actually, this is not the first time an upgrade has failed.
