To see if this has been fixed in newer versions I am now running after having installed:
sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-nouveau-hwe-16.04 xserver-xorg- core-hwe-16.04 xserver-xorg-hwe-16.04 linux-generic-hwe-16.04 xserver- xorg-input-libinput-hwe-16.04 Try this only at your own risk.
