Managed to trace the "hang" late in the 7.10 installation process to a faulty CD drive (6 month old LiteOn DVD+RW). Tried a spare (older) Samsung unit and that completed the installation all the way through. So, basically looks like the alternate installer doesn't deal so well with flaky hardware. Guess we can close out this bug.
