The 8812au dkms has been a constant PITA for me for a loooog time on Ubuntu (16.04 LTS, though). Almost every single kernel update fails to update the module and I need to run a 10 m cable for wired connection and update the additional drivers. It claims to the module to be in use but I need to remove it first and then install it again, before its working again. I've never actually looked at the demsg, though.
