A correction to the above: this delay appears to be present with most Gnome programs on my work desktop, including rhythmbox, gedit, totem, evolution and gnome-terminal. It also appears to be present on the KDE application Kolour Paint.
The delay is not present when starting the GIMP, calculator or Firefox however.
