I've seen the very same bug again today, with Linux 4.10.0-32-generic #36-Ubuntu.
This happened again when there were continuous writes to a large btrfs array with high CPU load (bitcoin-qt). The crash seems to be related to the GPU driver though. And even though X crashes/freezes, Apps keep running (musik keeps playing). Since I don't know how to reproduce this error, I don't know whether I can say for sure whether an upstream kernel would fix the issue.
