I can confirm this, in Kubuntu Gutsy. For me it seems random as well. This doesn't happen every time I open a new or existing document. If I select italic text, it is fine, but on the same line I cannot turn it off, I have to go to a new line. It can occur both directions, that is turning italic text off or on does not change the text.
