I have the same problem on laptop MAXDATA ECO 4510 IW (Intel 945GM card, "intel" driver in xorg): all Fn-Fx keys work ok, only Fn-F4 does not. I tried to install i810switch, but it makes more harm than good (it spoils Fn-F8 combination, which normally decreases brightness on this laptop model, and it still does not work). So I'm not able to connect external monitor.
