Hi Niv! This bug will probably never be fixed, due to licensing problems. Canon's driver is only partially released under the free licence, and until that changes, the Ubuntu team can not solve the issues around it.
Until then, we have to rely on the tutorials like the one mentioned, and keep sending emails to Canon's support, demanding a driver under a free licence. Hopefully, if there is enough demand, they will release it.
