On Ubuntu-gnome 17.04, I noticed an update to python3-poppler-qt5 a couple days ago with the same version number as the version from 17.10 that had fixed it for me. I haven't had a chance to test it yet, but I wanted to note it here in case someone else wants to get on it. My machine still shows preference for the 17.10 manually installed package, but maybe it will change to the Ubuntu repo when the version number gets higher than the package.
