I'm sorry! The problem I reported above was my fault. I didn't re-run NVidia's binary driver installer after the upgrade. Apparently, the "still-installed-from-Feisty" third-party-driver-installation became broken during the upgrade.
Of course, if anyone else were to blame for this, it would be NVidia, for not releasing a free driver. Maybe one could add a detection to the xorg distribution packages, to check if any third-party X grapics drivers are present, and output a textbox or warning message in that case, saying that the X installation is likely to be broken after the update?
