In general services are restarted on upgrade to pick up the new changes,
but failing to do so lets the upgrade fail and reroll.

P.S. do not dive into "Failed to preset unit: Unit file
/etc/systemd/system/samba-ad-dc.service is masked" that is bug 1658273 /
bug 1610361 which are not a bug.

Now for what you see is the service failing to (re-)start on upgrade due to the 
message above.
I don't know your setup maybe ipv6 only?
I'm no tsure if the nmbd config needs to be tweaked for this - would be 
interesting.

Please could you share details on your network setup and if it might be
related to the problem reported.
