Setting the multi-user.target causes a timeout error at boot,
complaining that it cannot connet lumetad (?).

BTW, as another possibly useful detail. After reboot the cat
/sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness and the grep .
/var/lib/systemd/backlight/* give both 1500 (the maximum). AS soon s I
change the brightness slider the cat
/sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness reflects the new value
(e.g. 450), while the grep . /var/lib/systemd/backlight/* still shows
1500.
